#155, a 4-string Guarneri model, was completed in March 2008. This instrument has an Idaho Engelmann spruce top and a uniquely figured silver maple back, sides and scroll. Frank nicknamed this instrument "smiley" because the figure on the back reminded him of a big smiley face. The silver maple was harvested by Frank’s father 40-50 years ago. The fiddle has great tonal qualities and is very even in volume across the four strings. This instrument was purchased in April 2008 as a very special gift for the wife of a California man who had recently purchased #144 for himself.

#167 is a 4-string Guarneri model completed in February 2009. The one-piece back, sides and neck on this instrument are quilted maple Frank purchased from a young man at the Darrington, WA Bluegrass Festival. The top wood is Engelmann spruce that came from central Idaho north of Brundage Mountain. This fiddle has a very pleasing tone and is well balanced on all four strings. This rich, red-brown colored instrument made its debut at the Lake Havasu City, AZ festival and it was amazing to listen to it blossom after several days of playing. It exhibits a very pleasing, clear and even tone.

#170 is a 4-string Strad model that was completed in August 2009 as part of a wood worker’s project initiated by Representative Max Black, District 15, Boise, Idaho. A beautiful piece of red oak that was harvested from a tree planted at the Idaho Capitol building in 1891 by then President Benjamin Harrison was used for the back, sides, scroll and chinrest. The top wood is Idaho Engelmann spruce that Frank harvested near McCall, Idaho.

Never having used red oak for a fiddle back, Frank found this to be an intriguing project. The oak has rather unique characteristics and was much easier to carve than he had anticipated. Frank wasn’t sure how the tonal qualities of this wood would compare to the maple and other woods he normally uses for his instrument backs. He was pleasantly surprised to find that the instrument produced a very clear, sweet tone, had good volume, and the projection was amazing.

Click HERE for complete details on this project and learn where this instrument will be displayed.
